    • Didn't realize most of the coffees on the link were for 284g. Just had to cancel 10 orders of coffee as there was no deal to be had.

    • To avoid oil build-up issues, most coffee roasters recommend medium roast for super automatics. My local guy puts a bit of darker beans in his medium roast which I prefer.

You can still use dark roast, it won't break your machine if you clean it regularly as you should. I have come to prefer the subtleties of medium roasts however.

      Deal is dead now obviously
Yep dead! Hopefully another deal pops up between now and the holidays. I appreciate the response.

    • Nobody cares how much they're espresso machine cost.

And why are you asking what brand of coffee to get in a Kicking Horse thread?
I wasnt asking what brand to get [...], I was asking what roast to get. I was told beans that were too oily were no good for the grinder in the machine. I dont know what model of espresso machine that they have and they live 20 hours away. I do, however, know what they paid for it, so that is my best way to describe it.

Thanks for the help though. [...]
Edit: and it's "their espresso machine" not they're [...].

    • How did you find coupon?
I had added the coffee with coupon to my cart yesterday when it was sale priced at $10 with extra 30% off coupon attached. Price lowered to $7.99 today, the 30% coupon remained, then I checked out

      How did you find coupon?
30% of $7.99 is just a penny short of $2.40, which means the "coupon" he is referring to is (most likely) the Amazon S&S discount. That discount has already been mentioned in this thread - I used it as well. :) I think it's one-time per account.

    • Finally!! The decaf is in special. ✌️🙌😁 Beware though, it's only available at 1kg but still, it's equivalent to 9.99$/pound. This is a good deal in my books as I don't remember the last time amazon had it at this price. Thanks op!

    • Yeah, likely the Cuisinart isn't heating the water to the proper temperature like most coffeemakers. Another problem is if you don't make a full pot, the results will be even worse. A Clever Dripper is another great device. Very easy to use and consistent results.
The coffee that comes out is piping hot, almost too hot for my liking but that's a personal thing. Full pot is the worst for the coffee maker. . There comes a time where that coffee to water ratio just doesn't work anymore for mine. If I am making 12 cups, I have to decrease the amount of coffee to as if I am making it for 10 cups. Overall though, I can't complain too much about it. The other coffee makers I tried before this....it didn't even come close. Tried an Oster they had in stock at the store and also a quick brew by Oster as well. Both were bland and the oster quick brew was just water with some coffee taste to it.

I sometimes take the carafe out of the coffee maker (the odd times I am awake before the auto timer kicks in) and wait till about 2 our of the 4 cups of water is done and then put the carafe back in. Steeps it a bit like the clever dripper. Makes a bit of difference. But like I mentioned, just need to adjust to your tastes. Usually you can come close but it's the bitterness that doesn't seem to go away.

What blend of Kicking Horse would be recommended for a superautomatic or automatic espresso machine (if any?) - the concern being oily beans contribute to issues.
I use the cliffhanger but it's a little bit oily. What I usually do is alternate between oily and non-oily beans (ex: Lavazza)

    • It's definitely not the grinds. I've experimented with different grind consistencies and different beans. All the same results. Good via manual pour over, auto drip...on the bitter side. It could very well could be the machine. I tried 3 or 4 before I settled on mine which is about 4 years old now (Cuisinart from Costco). It's decent, I like the machine for convenience (auto timer is handy when running out the door with kid and work). Had to send the others back as the coffees they made were terrible. All auto drip machines will have their quirks. You'll have to adjust your grind, amount, and water to suit your taste. Most auto drip machines will heat the water as it sprays through the head but it's hard to say what temp it heats it to. Also with the drip, there's no "blooming" process and you can't really control how quick or how slow you pour the water. I know my temp is around 204 degrees as I have a hot water dispenser when I do a manual pour over. Even with an "auto" pour over like the Motif essential pour over, you can't control the flow but there is a blooming process where it will pre-soak the grinds. It also heats up the water before pumping it through to the grinds so technically speaking there's more temp regulation but I'm just speaking from the literature available. I have the Motif machine...impulse buy and have not used it yet. At $50USD....I couldn't resist. I'll be giving it a test run this week to see how it compares to a manual process. It also does not have a heating element which I never liked...I find that those just "brew" the coffee all over again.

It's not a huge deal for me as I mainly use a manual pour over. The auto drip is used during the work week. I also use a different coffee for mornings as I'm just looking for a warm beverage and some caffeine. Though I don't know how effective the caffeine is as I can have a cup at night and go right to sleep.

I'll say this though, if you grind the same beans (adjusting for coarseness/fineness) for 20 coffee makers, you're going to get 20 different tasting experiences. I got bored one day and decided to do that for 3 different beans across my pour over, drip, and french press. Also did it for the stove top percolator. Aside from manual pour over, stove top percolated was OUTSTANDING! If I manage to get that trial run going this week, I'll shoot you a PM with the results if you're interested.

    • You are grinding too fine or you don't have a good automatic coffeemaker. With a good machine, results should be similar to a manual pour over.

Thanks, yes, my primary way of coffee is either i) pour-over ii) Aeropress iii) French Press. Secondary indulgence is Espresso via Breville. No Drip here, because of reasons you cited.

    • The question is when was it roasted? When do they expire?? Anyone have the info??
They do expire. Mine have expiry dates in 2020 from my order a couple of months ago. I've used beans that were past their expiry date (my fault as I wasn't paying attention...I have A LOT of coffee. The beans were fine, I did not find them stale as the package was still sealed. Use an air tight container to store your beans or grinds once open to help keep it as fresh as possible. In terms of freshness...they are fresh, haven't had a stale bag yet. Obviously a local roaster is your best bet. I have access to a local roaster that is fresh (1 day) but they use single origin beans. I can't really compare them to kicking horse as they blend their beans. Most of the popular coffees you buy are roasted a bit on the darker side as it's easier for quality control. Their medium roasts are still a bit on the darker side and their light roast is on the medium side of roasts (not sure if I made much sense there). Starbucks roasts their coffees like that...if you compare say their Ethiopian yirgacheffe to say Trader Joe's, you'll see Trader Joe's is noticeably lighter. Also the taste isn't as smoky/bitter. Local roasters also roast these as medium so I've had a few to try but my palette prefers the Trader Joe's.

Just depends on how you like your beans roasted and from what regions. Many choices out there and also many opinions. Some do not enjoy the taste of kicking horse and others do. I like them as their blends are great tasting and it's good value for the money. I also have single origin beans that I like but those you will pay a premium for.

**Also forgot this in the original reply. I find that kicking horse tastes the best via pour over bug again this is personal. On an automatic drip, I find the taste to be a bit on the bitter side but pour over has been very smooth (this is across all their beans I've tried and am currently using: Hoodoo Joe, Smart Ass, Kick Ass, Z-Wrangler, Three sisters, pacific pipeline, Grizzly claw, 454 Horse Power). French press....I didn't care for the taste much but I use my french press for other coffees with great results. YMMV.

      https://forums.redflagdeals.com/amazon- ... e-2329405/
      30% off + $0.50 for S&S... makes a 1lb bag of 454 Horsepower $10 - $3 - $0.50 = $6.50. And I had some courtesy credit from Amazon.

Pretty solid deal, I have a bunch of coffee to rotate around now... it's going to last me a long ass time. Thanks!

      Smart ass is $22/kg, less the 30% and 5% s/s was $14.34 I believe.
We love Cliffhanger roast. Bought one on S&S and works out to. $5.50 each. Awesome deal, wish the 30% wasn’t only on one item.
S and S is not a hassle, as you can cancel at anytime...
