Hi, I just ended up getting the Logitech F310 gamepad (only 5 bucks off but it's got decent warranty coverage 3 year from logitech)
I'm a new pc gamer and I find it alright - not amazing by any means but as long as I can use it for a few years, I'm good with it.

This was unadvertised but it's a pretty good deal , just pulled the trigger make sure to use Rakuten for 1.3% cash back.

Yeah I saw this too. Have been watching prices on MS Store and Lenovo and this is the best price I've seen. Pulled the trigger myself and used Rakuten of course for a few extra bucks.

Heard really good things about this 2 in 1 so I'm pretty pumped to get it. My estimated delivery isn't until December 12 though!

    • Just curious how this is a better deal than the msi from microsoft for $1250 I think? The msi had a 512 ss drive and 1tb. The i7 9750 with 16 gig ram and the 1660 ti GPU.
The MSI is a good deal as well but it wasn't posted when I replied to you, as well its about $212 more so it's up to you if it's worth it, the screen would make it worth it to me.

Best Buy looks to be selling the same laptop on their flyer. Model number is different though. non full HD screen too. I kind of feel like for $599, that Asus Ryzen 5, 8gb, 512g, full HD is probably better for general usage than this.

MSI is 16GB, 17" and 144MHz. I'd personally prefer the 16GB and better screen for ~100 bucks but if I could get the G3 for 900 bucks that's a good deal IMO.

here is a pretty nice rig for what should be around $1062+ GST + 10% ebates.

512GB SSD, 1660Ti Max Q. I would buy this if I hadn't just bought the other one, just needs a RAM upgrade.

    • I just wanted to point out to everyone looking at the notebooks with an eye for gaming that the GTX 1650 is not really a gaming card but a multimedia card. Like its predecessors the GTX 1050, which itself was a derivative of 400m to 600M video cards its going to be fine for older games but perhaps more challenged on modern games. And performance is really subject to how the notebook is set up, particularly for heat.

For a real gaming notebook you need to be looking at the RTX2060 and above (in the latest gens).
My $529 Asus TUF with 1650 disagrees.

Depends what kind of games you like playing. Beat Saber, Superhot VR, Pavlov VR, Creed: Rise to Glory, Raw Data, Onward, Contractors VR, Arizona Sunshine, Star Trek: Bridge Crew are some games that I enjoyed playing (most of the one's on this list are shooters or multiplayer games).

Also I'm not sure about what research has shown about VR and children, but many headsets just outright say Do not use under x age.

Edit: Also can't forget to mention Half Life : Alyx is coming out and the Oculus store games, which you have to use a third-party addon to get it to work with WMR (I think it is called Revive). There's the Star Wars episodes, Asgard's Wrath, the upcoming Medal of Honor game

    • It is a really good deal as far as current VR HMD's go at the moment. There is no question in my mind which one is the better headset, but which one is more worth it? That's going to be different for some people. If your IPD is not within the safe range for the Rift S you can rule it out right now, so that makes it an easy choice. If it is however, you can just buy both from the Microsoft store and return the one you don't want (no restocking fee or hassle) after you tried them both and decided for yourself in your financial situation which one is more worth it. That's what I would do if I wasn't sure.

Also, take a look at the dangers of VR for younger kids. HMD's are not good for developing eyes so you will want to heavily limit the amount of time they use the headset for.

    • Don't. Doesn't need to be Photoshop user to want better res. That low x768 res makes the screen space really limited. $599 for that res is so not worth it.
Also, I think customers need to communicate the obsolescence of the HD displays to the companies buy boycotting laptops with those.

It looks like there were several articles in 2016 that indicate there isn't a lot of research on children using VR but that as you say their use should be limited. That shouldn't be a problem as they are pretty busy most of the week anyway!

I think I will give the Odyssey+ a go and if I like it I will keep it but I am not going to order the Rift S when I know I don't want to spend close to double the money on it right now. I can see myself paying that money in a year or two but not yet . . .

      Thanks!
    • Sorry I didn't quote you the first time but I just posted that the Odyssey+ is back in stock and I questioned if the Rift S is really worth ~84% more money than the Odyssey+ because that is the price delta right now. They are not reasonably close in price right now so given the price difference would you go for the Odyssey+ given the massive savings?

    • I'm not sure if you have actual hands-on experience with these HMDs like I do (as I owned both) but the difference between the two is very noticeable. The spec sheet doesn't show everything. The Rift S screen is superior for playing VR games as the Odyssey's anti-SDE filter makes games noticeably blurry (if you plan to play any shooter VR games it is not ideal trying to look down gun sights for example). If you are going to be watching VR content instead or maybe certain sim games then the Odyssey has a superior screen because of the OLED display. As you said, you don't notice the 10 Hz difference. You should definitely measure your IPD to see if the Rift S is good for you, I'll admit that, there's no going around that issue (luckily I don't have alien eyes). The only other advantage that the Odyssey has is that the built in speakers are sooo much better than the Rift S's speakers, the Rift S speakers are trash, luckily you can just plug in your own headphones which I do.

Comfort was a major factor for me, with the Odyssey it will leave band strap marks on your forehead and is just very uncomfortable after short play sessions. If you wear glasses, there is almost no space in the visor between the actual screen and your glasses+eyes... it is very cramped in there, expect smudging on all the surfaces. Once you use the WMR controllers and then switch to the Oculus Touch controllers, you will be pleasantly surprised. There's a good reason the Oculus Touch controllers are the best in the business (well probably #2 behind the Index, but that's not available in Canada yet). WMR controller battery life is very bad. And again, the software experience on the Oculus is night and day (game selection and support). With WMR the setup isn't just plug and play, you can't just load up steam games off the bat. Everything seems to require an extra step for setup with WMR.

And yes, these devices compete with each other of course - they are reasonably close in price. However, the Oculus Rift S wins in almost every category so it isn't much of a competition. Just make sure your IPD is in the safe range for the Rift S since that is something that can't be fixed.

EDIT: But in the end, this is from the Microsoft store. Buy both, try them out and return the one you don't want (such an easy return process). I think most people would pay the difference for the Rift S once you see what I mean.

The Samsung HMD Odyssesy+ is back in stock for 299!! I ordered one this afternoon and I received a shipping confirmation email not too long afterwards. It is being shipped from the US via UPS and it will arrive here in Ontario next week.

I haven't used the Oculus Rift S, the Vive Pro or the Odyssey+ plus but 250/300 is 83% more money for the Oculus Rift S (550) on Microsoft's Canadian website and on Amazon.ca and that is pre-tax. $337.87-$621.50=$283.63 and $283.63/337.87 is 84% more money after tax.

Is the Oculus Rift S worth almost 84% more money!? I somehow doubt it and even if it was, I don't have ~$621 bucks right now for a VR headset but I can manage ~338 bucks. I will use it for a couple of years and let the kids use it and then give it to them if I upgrade in the future.

i ordered a surface bundle and xbox controller and according to the MS cash back descriptions, both qualify as 5.3% and not 1.3% ... could be an honest mistake or ...

but it's significant and takes a bit of sting out of missing out on the costco offering.

edit* rakuten has made the changes so thanks to customer service for fixing it quickly. I would recommend anyone to contact them and get it checked out.
