Lol... Kasa plugs have built in timers if you know exactly what time you want to use Alexa otherwise you can turn on using Kasa app on your phone or Alexa app, Google Home app, etc

    • I don't know about Alexa, but it's wild how bad Google Assistant is now compared to 2018-2019. We have Google speakers in every room and they were used regularly, now they can barely play the songs we ask for.

I assume Alexa had a similar fall. It's obvious they haven't figured out how to recoup the cost of running all those servers and need to get rid of them.
      Right?

Google is absolutely trash now. I have one in every room, with the little screen ones in the bedrooms and office. I use a bunch of Nest products including the thermostat and door locks.

The screens and speakers are useless. Asking it to play music, despite having googles youtube music premium, just doesn't work.
Simple things, like asking google to play my "morning playlist" and it responds with "the front door is already locked" after about 90 seconds.
Even simple things, like asking it what the weather is today, or "hey google, is it going to rain today" is just met with a huge delay of atleast 60 seconds before it answers "I dont know, but where is what I found on the web" and shows me a list of CNN links.
"Turn on office light" will just do random shit, like turning the TV volume to max.
I have done updates, have them all on a fantastically fast network.
The other day I asked it to play music in my kitchen and it wouldnt work, but I went to the garage a few hours later and my garage speaker was playing music.

My office display google, if I manually set it to show my doorbell cam, switching back to the clock takes sooo long. I have it right infront of me and I just tried and its been trying to switch back to the clock for a good 2 min already. It was rebooted this morning.

Its all E-waste at this point. Google used to be a premium product, but its complete trash. I remember years ago when I first got it and it was snappy and accurate.

    • Depends on the use case. Try asking "Play head shoulders knees and toes". Alexa on random days responds "should I sign you up for .....and play heads shoulders knees and toes". If you don't turn off voice purchase, most kids are likely to answer "yes". And such purchase nudges are usually random. There was a time none were needed if you had prime.
Just wait till the kids learn about Alexa and fart sounds... and then buying the "The Extreme Farts Extension Pack" 😂

    • The functionality of these are inconsistent and sketchy, even for the higher level Echo Frame. I experimented with these to use as a smart wifi connected clock radio. Its advertised as such and command instructions exist but the units response becomes "I am unable to complete that at this time..." I have read that legal issues regarding privacy and other matters have made the functionality of each update unpredictable. I ended up buying a wifi connected clock radio with a radio tuner for half the cost.

    • For those that praise Alexa and have one of those devices:

Can you ask for it to play a music alarm with a specific song without paying for a Amazon Music/Spotify subscription?
The loophole as originally described was that if you set a music alarm for a future time like 1 minute from now, AND you have Amazon Prime with limited Amazon Music, you could ask for any specific song from Amazon Music Unlimited.

I just tested with the Echo Dot on my U.S. Amazon account that does not have Prime, and I was able to play specific song titles as alarms. So maybe the original limitation has changed? Or maybe it's getting music from Spotify, since that account does have Spotify? However the alarm music plays on the little Dot speaker and doesn't get redirected to the Sonos speakers in the room like music normally does.

    • We have two of these. Have had Alexa for several years now.
She has never asked about "subscribing" to anything.
      Never heard about voice purchases.
Don't think we have ever gone to settings. They just work. For us anyway.
We use it for alarm, timer and radio stations. She also tells me when a package is at the front door!

Yes, the company is reportedly losing money on Alexa and is looking at ideas to try and fix this. Reportedly they looked at a subscription service but put it on the back burner because they thought their customers might walk away if asked to pay. Subscription services for automobiles reportedly were a big failure ( "For only $69 per month we'll activate the air conditioner in your car!!!! And for just another $10 we'll give you two more speeds for your fan!! And as an added free bonus we'll allow you to start adjusting your vents!")

      https://www.aboutamazon.com/news/device ... erative-ai
yep, they just cycle back and forth between who has updated features, often those updates features make the basic old features worse lol

I just want it to listen correct, hear my turn off / turn on requests, and control my tv. I dont even set complicated routines or play music heh, and it still struggles after years to do these basic tasks with Google TVs which should work fine.

You link it to your Amazon account and configure it with an app on your phone. There is a switch on the unit to turn off the mic.

    • Also, make sure you turn off Voice Purchasing on or off for your account, use the Alexa app.
      • Open the Alexa app .
      • Open More and select Settings.
      • Select Account Settings.
      • Select Voice Purchasing.
      • Turn Voice Purchasing on or off.

This will block accidental purchases when random people say yes to Voice purchase but won't stop the daily pestering by Alexa to purchase a subscription. If you want to "reduce" Alexa daily pestering for a subscription purchase, do the following:
      • In the Alexa app, go to More, then Settings, then Notifications and tap Things to Try. Turn off both Phone and Device notifications for "things to try".

While this will reduce the nudges, it won't eliminate Alexa's requests for subscriptions. However, if you have turned off voice purchase, it would at least prevent the kids from signing up subscriptions accidentally.

    • I have both Google and Alexa. Alexa does what I ask 90% of the time, 10% of the time I have to repeat myself.
I have two google home mini's, when I ask to play music it works 70% of the time, 30% it asks to try again and something went wrong
When I ask the mini to turn on/off the lights it works 80% of the time but takes 5-7 seconds for the lights to respond which pisses me off as I don't know if I have to repeat myself.
20% of the time I have to repeat myself using a louder voice, this drives me nuts.

I can switch to using all Alexa, but what the hell do I do with my google mini's, chuck em?
      First world problems...

    • I got some pretty good deals on Alexa devices starting with a Fire Cube for $89.
A couple of cheap/free led lights and smart plugs with other purchases like this Echo Dot with clock and a $39 Echo Show 5.

The bedroom clock turns the light on and off and has the alarm. Its name is Echo.

The Show has the speaker and camera turned off. It sits in front of me so I can turn the speaker and camera on and off with the buttons. Its name is Ziggy.

The Cube uses the remote for Alexa so I don't have to say her name just give the command.

My bread machine has to be unplugged after use which is annoying so I use a smart plug and Alexa or Ziggy turns it on and off.

My desktop uses a hard to reach power bar so it uses a smart plug.

      They all work without problems.

The phone app also turns these things on and off.

These items are not connected to servers in China the way most other smart plugs are. So they aren't at as much risk to hacking their firmware.

    • I don’t know about that. They have people using them, that was the goal. They make money based on using our information, so as long as they work at a minimal level and they are in our houses, job done.
      100% that is/was the goal

The server costs sure are a concern, but the amount of money they make off obtaining our info by listening to our conversations, browsing history, etc and then catering emails and popups to those conversations is priceless.

    • 100% this. You can no longer play anything on Google speakers if you don't have a subscription. Alexa does bug you often, but shuts off asking for a "Amazon Music Unlimited or the Family Plan". Google speakers are trash these days without a subscription!
We have a family YouTube Music Premium plan. It will still play random stuff most of the time.

There's one in the garage / gym, it randomly starts playing music a few evenings a week.

Ask it to turn on a light, it's turns on the whole house's lights... Ask something in English, it answers in French (and vice versa).

I used to be able to say "Hey Google , broadcast "ok kids, time for bed" ", now it never works...

And finally we bought Lenovo smart clocks essentials for the kids to use music alarms. Well, they're removing the music alarms functionality this month. Why? Just why? I paid for the device, I pay for YouTube music, the function already exists, why remove it? Infuriating.

I really use Alexa for basic things like turn on lights or open Netflix. I have Google in bedroom and office. Works somewhat better but not by much IMHO.

I need to tell Alexa a few times to turn on the correct lights or repeat to have TV turn off and such. Not a big deal but seems less responsive and the understanding of instructions has gotten worse.

Sometimes just get frustrated and get off my as$ and do it myself! Haha
