McDonald's Canada is Launching New MyMcDonald's Rewards Program on November 16th

By Thomas Kenzaki

McDonald's Canada is launching a brand new customer rewards program on November 16th called MyMcDonald's Rewards. It provides Canadians more options than ever before to both earn points and redeem them for rewards.

Their current rewards program, which is limited to just coffee and french fries, is being discontinued and the new points based MyMcDonald’s Rewards program is set to replace it across Canada.

MyMcDonald’s Rewards was introduced earlier this year in the US, and the similarly named Canadian version is scheduled to debut next week. Both are based around earning points for purchases which can then be redeemed towards various tiers of rewards, however in Canada there’s more tiers, and more rewards available.

According to McDonald’s Canada Chief Marketing Officer, Alyssa Buetikofer, one of the main reasons for the change was to attract more customers by expanding the rewards program to include more menu items,

How to Earn and Redeem Points

To start, you’ll need to download the McDonald’s app to your mobile device, register for an account, and then activate your MyMcDonald’s Rewards account. If you already have the latest version of their mobile app, you’re good to go.

With MyMcDonald’s Rewards, you’ll earn 100 points for every $1 spent (excluding taxes, fees, gift cards, delivery orders and select other items).

All mobile orders made through the McDonald’s app will automatically receive points, but to receive points for orders placed at the restaurant, you’ll need to provide your rewards code from the app when you place your order.

Now that you know how to earn points, you need to learn what you can use your points on. There are five different tiers of rewards categories, with the first starting at just 2,000 points.

Here’s a breakdown of the different levels and the menu items within each:

2,000 Points

  • Premium Roast Coffee/Tea/Iced Coffee (any size)
  • Hash brown
  • Vanilla Cone
  • 2 Li’L Donuts

4,000 Points

  • Fries (any size)
  • Sausage McMuffin
  • Cheeseburger
  • Latte (any size)

6,000 Points

  • McDouble
  • McMuffin Breakfast Sandwich (choose from Egg McMuffin, Bacon ‘N Egg McMuffin or Sausage ‘N Egg McMuffin)
  • Junior Chicken
  • Snack Size McFlurry

10,000 Points

  • Big Mac
  • McMuffin Extra Value Meal (choose from Egg McMuffin, Bacon ‘N Egg McMuffin or Sausage ‘N Egg McMuffin Extra Value Meal)
  • 6-pc Chicken McNuggets
  • Happy Meal (any)

14,000 Points

  • Quarter Pounder with Cheese Extra Value Meal
  • Big Mac Extra Value Meal
  • McChicken Extra Value Meal
  • 10-pc Chicken McNuggets

Your points will continue to accumulate within the app until redeemed, or until they expire which happens 6 months after they were earned. This should give most customers plenty of time to redeem them as you’ll only need to spend $20 within a 6 month span to earn a tier 1 rewards item.

What Happens to Existing McDonald’s Rewards and McCafé Rewards Stickers?

Your previously accumulated McDonald’s Rewards punches in the app will be automatically transitioned to points at a rate of 300 points for every punch, and any free rewards you have will be redeemable until February 28, 2022.

For those of you wondering about the McCafé Rewards stickers and cards, they’re going to be sticking around (no pun intended) for the time being except in Manitoba and Kenora, Dryden and Fort Frances, ON where the program is being sunset as part of a test.

With the absence of a physical rewards card (like with Tim Horton’s rewards program), it’s good to know that the popular coffee sticker program will not immediately come to an end (except for in the previously mentioned regions) and will still provide some rewards to customers without a mobile device and those less technologically inclined.

To assist with the roll out of MyMcDonald’s Rewards, guest experience leaders will be available at restaurants to help customers with issues like connecting to McDonald’s WiFi, and answering any questions they might have about the new program.

Special Bonus Offers

As a special introductory offer, customers making their first purchase will receive 5,000 bonus points on their first MyMcDonald’s Rewards order of $1 or more (enough for free fries, a sausage McMuffin, cheeseburger, or latte).

While the above bonus points offer is only available on your first purchase, McDonald’s will continue to offer MyMcDonald’s Rewards bonus offers in the app, allowing you to earn extra points for making select purchases from time to time.

Final Thoughts

The transition from McDonald’s Rewards to MyMcDonald’s Rewards is an improvement for customers who aren’t big fans of coffee or fries, as it opens up the ability to earn rewards points for almost every purchase, and can also be redeemed towards select items across the entire menu range.

Now that you know all about MyMcDonald's Rewards, what do you think about the new rewards program? Let us know in the comments if you’re a fan of the change or not.

      Thanks?
      You're welcome?

Just for you for bumping this, I updated the chart.

And since everyone talks about inflation now, it was interesting to see how prices changed. One upside is that due to the fixed point values, the return you get on redemptions is slightly better.

Note the quarter pounder meal from Nov was a special item that was much more expensive and not available anymore, so it didn't actually go down. Iced coffee probably went down due to the dollar drink summer promo.

    • Out of curiosity I calculated the best value rewards.. just used current app prices (Ontario). Clearly the best value for menu prices is the cheaper stuff, but I don't usually buy those at full price anyway, so shrug.. ~5-7% back on average otherwise.

I'm not 100% sure the specialty are available to redeem, so if you have to get the regular versions the value goes down.

L Flavored Latte is $4.19 right now and the next best option to XL Coffee/Tea at $2.26.

So basically only worth redeeming for L Flavored Iced Coffee, XL coffee/tea, or L Flavored Latte when they are not on sale.

    • Just a friendly reminder to buy something and use up any points that are expiring Jul 01, 2022.

I would recommend using them up either tonight or tomorrow, as I'm uncertain when during the day on Jul 01 the points expire.

    • But the code changes from time-to-time. I have no idea how long it stays on any given 4-digit combination but I just checked and it's different now than it was when I made that post.

Maybe someone assumed their code never changes? Idk.

I can see the points in my history but I can't see actual transaction details because the purchase wasn't actually made using my account in the app.

    • Don't you just read them a 4-digit code at the drive-through window? Maybe they misread the code or the employee mistyped it? Surprised though that it doesn't show up in your history in the McD app.

Happy to read about the cards still being good, I got a sticker on a cup the other day. Still have lots of cards to redeem, had no idea it might be going away. Better get on it, because let's face it eventually they will kill it.

I got a notification yesterday that I received 497 points for my purchase that had reportedly just occurred, which I couldn't have done because I was at work and didn't stop at McDonald's before going there.

All my CCs are fine but like, how on earth did someone potentially use the wrong code?

    • Ya no I'm definitely out once this comes into effect.

      Back to my:

HUGE 30oz Yeti tumbler (keeps coffee warm 4-5 hours) - $45
5kg of decent whole bean medium roast coffee - $25
Walmart small coffee grinder - $10

It's like 5 cents a coffee over 1 year and less once the tumbler is paid off.

    • Hello

The info here about expiring stamp/sticker cards is actually only partially true. I checked on the mcdonakds Canada website as well as contacted them and only a small part of Canada has the cards expiring Feb 28/22 (parts of on and mb) the rest of Canada does not and when I asked about bc I was told there was no bc expiry date set as of yet.
Screenshot of the response is posted here :

This seems to line up with what I heard in Ottawa. I asked the staff at a McDonald's locations (one of the well run ones so I figured they would be informed) as I was redeeming a stamp card. They said the stamps are not expiring and they continue to issue cups with the stamps on them.

I did an order this morning using the $4.29 Breakfast Meal Deal, and when I added a second McMuffin it only charged me $3 for it, showing it was using another offer.

McDonald's are currently testing removing the on-cup McCafé Rewards stickers in your province.

      From https://www.mcdonalds.com/ca/en-ca/getm ... wards.html

"There are no changes to the on-cup McCafé Rewards sticker program at this time. That said, we are currently testing removing the on-cup McCafé Rewards stickers in Manitoba and selected areas of Northwestern Ontario (Fort Frances, Kenora, Dryden). These areas were part of our test for the new MyMcDonald’s Rewards program. We’ll keep our guests informed about any other changes we make in the future."

      1 million points is:

      -500 coffees/teas/hashbrowns (2000 ea)
      -250 lattes/fries/cheeseburgers (4000 ea)
      -166 mcflurries/mcmuffins/mcdoubles (6000 ea)
      -100 mcmuffin EVMs/big macs/happy meals/6x mcnuggets (10k ea)
      -71 qpc EVMs/10x mcnuggets/big mac EVM/mcchicken EVM (14k ea)

Anyways, it says in the "fine print" that the points still expire after 6 months, so like, you're gonna have to eat A LOT of mcdonald's in 180 days 🤣

      Okay, I found them, I have 10.

Looks like I have to switch somewhere else once my Free Coffees are used up. No clue what these Punches are, pretty uninterested because I only went there when there were good "2 can Dine" coupons and such. It's been basically absent for the last couple months or whenever this thing started.

I went in there the other day and wondered why the place was empty, without a packed Drive-Thru - now I know. Oh well, lots of other fish in the sea.

      What Happened to McDonald’s Rewards?
McDonald’s Rewards (the program where users were collecting digital punches toward a free medium fries or a free medium hot McCafé® beverage) are now a part of MyMcDonald’s Rewards, which means you’ll be earning points for just about everything you purchase, including your favourite McCafé® beverages and fries! Each punch you have outstanding on your mobile McDonald’s Rewards card will be converted to 300 points (up to a maximum of 1,800 points) when you join MyMcDonald's Rewards! Don’t worry, any earned FREE reward you have in your Offers from the McDonald’s Rewards program will remain in your dashboard for you to redeem until February 28, 2022!

They want to attract/reward people who order full meals which makes sense. I doubt they will miss the casual coffee drinkers. A&W is my new goto as there is never a lineup there.

Not to mention you can double dip and earn more punches when you order meal with fries or use stamp card to redeem coffee.

      Now:
Need to spend $20 to get one free coffee, no more double dip.

Definitely devalued, just like Airline frequent flyer program changed from mileage-based to revenue-based.
And to mention that during the $1 coffee days & raptors free fries, you got 2 virtual stickers for the $1.05. Not anymore :( As you pointed out, it would take 20 of these visits to get a free coffee.
